Point Loma is a community of San Diego situated on a peninsula that is bordered by the Pacific Ocean and the San Diego Bay. Point Loma actually separates the San Diego Bay & the Pacific Ocean.
Point Loma has a very significant and colorful history.
Europeans first discovered Point Loma on September 28, 1542. The Portuguese navigator, Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, left Mexico to explore the west coast of the United States. He landed on the east shore, the first landing by a European in present day California, so Point Loma has been described as “where California began”.
Over 200 years passed before a permanent settlement began in 1769. Mission San Diego had its port in Point Loma beach called La Playa, where ships unloaded their cargo using small ships. La Playa continued to be San Diego’s “port” until the settling of New Town, where downtown is now, in the 1870s. Because ships discarding and taking on their ballast in San Diego Bay, it became known as Ballast Point. Fort Guijarros was established at Ballast Point in 1797. Ballast Point and La Playa are now on the grounds of Naval Base Point Loma.
Katherine Tingley relocated the Theosophical Society, in 1900, to a hilltop campus, “Lomaland”, overlooking the ocean. Even though the campus had unusual architecture and lifestyles, it became an important source of music and culture for the residents of San Diego between 1900 and 1920. Because of all the planting of trees and crops the area became known as The Wooded area of Point Loma. They have been given credit for introducing the avocado to California.
The Old Point Loma Lighthouse is the best known landmark in Point Loma. It was set at the top of the southern point at the entrance of the bay, finished in 1854 and first lit November 15, 1855. It seemed a good location being above sea level but soon proved to be a poor location due to low clouds and fog. On March 23, 1891 the lighthouse was no longer used as a beacon for oncoming ships. A new lighthouse was built closer to sea level. The Old Point Loma Lighthouse has been refurbished and is now partially open to the public.
Several unique neighborhoods make up the Point Loma community. Point Loma Village is the retail heart of the peninsula. The retail serves residents as well as the yachting and sport fishing interest.
Shelter Island, not really an island, is connected to Point Loma Village, developed in the 1950s. It was made into dry land by dredging material from the bay. The Port of San Diego controls this area where there are hotels, restaurants, marinas and public parking.
La Playa is on the bayside of the peninsula, and has some of the most expensive homes in San Diego, many with private piers.
In the hills above La Playa is the Wooded Area, on the bay side and so called because of the many, many trees in the area. To the ocean side of the peninsula is Sunset Cliffs known for the fantastic ocean view homes.
Other established neighborhoods include Roseville, the oldest settled part of the peninsula. And Loma Portal, which lies directly under the flight path of Lindbergh Field. A unique feature of Loma Portal is the location of the street lights which are in the middle of several intersections.
The newest retail and commercial neighborhood is found at Liberty Station. It also has residential as well.
Wherever you choose to live in Point Loma you will be close to downtown San Diego and all that it has to offer, shopping at the mall, fine dining and of course, the beaches.
