East Village, San Diego Homes for Sale

The East Village neighborhood of San Diego is the largest district in downtown San Diego and borders three of San Diego's most famous landmarks, the "Gaslamp Quarter",  Balboa Park and the San Diego Convention Center.

Traditionally known as an area of vacant lots and warehouses, East Village began to develop into an artists' community in the 1990's, but the construction of Petco Park  (home of the San Diego Padres' professional baseball club) in 2003 has turned it into the fastest growing ,most vibrant community in the city. Along with the new stadium came luxury hotels, trendy restaurants, hip nightlife, cool galleries and boutique shops. This influx of commerce has helped augment its role as a center of the downtown art scene.

Living in East Village can mean owning a modest artist's live/work space or even a multimillion dollar highrise overlooking Coronado Island. Crime rates in the neighborhood are extremely low. With highly ranked public and private schools nearby, the neighborhood has seen a recent influx of families to accompany the single population. Imagine a breakfast at one of its quaint, open-air cafes, a short walk to Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo,  hanging out at the "Park at the Park" at Petco Park (bring your frisbees, wiffle balls and four-legged pals!), and ending your day at one of the outstanding eateries it has to offer, anything from fabulous Mexican to mouth-watering steaks and seafood. There are excellent dog parks for your pets and many hotels, restaurants and cafes are quite pet-friendly! Enjoy all this in weather and climate that boasts nearly year-round 70-ish degree weather with low humidity, nearly no mosquitoes and about 300 days of sunshine per year!

San Diego's downtown is the antithesis of many cities that have that overwhelmingly intimidating, confusing urban sprawl feel. Downtown streets are clean, safe, pedestrian friendly (drivers WILL yield at intersections!), easy to navigate ( street names are numbered west to east and lettered south to north), and parking is readily available  (meters or garages) and reasonably priced. The recently completed Harbor Drive Pedestrian Bridge connecting East Village to the convention center and waterfront  and the soon-to-be-completed nine-story, state-of-the-art Central Library in the heart of the village are just two of the exciting projects planned for the area.In the near future, expect to see a major expansion of the San Diego Convention Center, making it the largest west of the Mississippi, the wonderful World Fair experience of Balboa Park's Centennial celebration in 2015, an expanded public transportation system and continued expansion of greenway/parks in the downtown area will make San Diego the world-class city it rightfully should be.If you want to get away for a short day trip from Downtown, consider that Palm Springs and Los Angeles are about a two-hour drive, while Las Vegas and Santa Barbara are about four hours. What a location! If you love San Diego and urban living, welcome to East Village!
