La Mesa; Spanish meaning “the table” or “the plateau”, is a city in San Diego County. The city of La Mesa was incorporated on February 16, 1912. La Mesa is about 12 miles east of the Pacific Ocean. Because of the location La Mesa will have warmer temperatures than San Diego. Typically La Mesa will have hot and dry summers and warm winters. Much of the rainfall will be between November and March.
La Mesa hosts many events through the year attended by people from all over San Diego.
- There is a Farmer’s Market that happens every Friday afternoon in the La Mesa Village.
- The first annual Flag Day parade which began on July 14, 1997 has been ongoing due to the commitment of Councilwoman Ruth Sterling.
- A favorite and the biggest event of the year is Oktoberfest. For three nights La Mesa Village is closed to traffic. Oktoberfest is enjoyed by thousands of people.
- Every summer the Back to the 50’s Car Show is held every Thursday evening in the months of June through August along La Mesa Blvd in La Mesa Village. Classic car enthusiasts park their cars for display.
Christmas in the Village and the Antique Street Fair are other annual events held in the La Mesa Village.
La Mesa has been the hometown to some famous people such as NBA player, Bill Walton along with football stars Reggie Bush and Alex Smith. Actor Dennis Hopper, baseball players Aaron Boone, Brooks Conrad and musicians Eddie Vedder and Dave Mustaine.
La Mesa covers an approximate area of nine square miles, filled with many wonderful neighborhoods. One such neighborhood is Lake View Estates. Lake View Estates is situated in the hills of La Mesa with Lake Murray to one side and Cowles Mountain on the other side. An established neighborhood, it is minutes from downtown San Diego. It is close to schools, shopping, freeways, and the many opportunities La Mesa has to offer.
